She’s Under Attack: The right ‘Tears’ into Sotomayor!

This week President Obama introduced Sonia Sotomayor as his choice to replace Judge David Souter on the Supreme Court. And since then, the political attacks on the judge as ” racist” is deafening. But is this true… or an un-necessary blow back from the right? It appears more like character assassination. Yes, the right is tearing into her as a dog would a rag doll. Their goal — an attempt to put so many ‘holes’ in her character, although she will be confirmed.

But are they succeeding at this game? Apparently, the GOP’s ‘titular heads’ strengthen and inflame their base in the process, but in the end how much does this type of vitriol

rty? I say zero! If a party looks only to its base, not ever thinking whom else it can I attract, that party is in a dying mode — drowning in its own weakness.

Could it be, that’s where the Republicans are at this time. For someone who believes strongly in a two-party system, I say, that’s really too bad!

But to the Democrats, kudos for ‘breaking’ the Republicans– reducing them to a ‘fringe’ and having them ‘implode’ from the core. Questions and scrutiny of any such appointee is appropriate , but that Sotomayor is under such an attack, is unbelievable! Anything to do with her being a woman? I would hope not? A minority?

And given , if there was an American ‘story’ worth embracing, repeating over, and over again, this is one– that of Judge Sotomayor; who through hard work and discipline has moved up through the system to become a jurist , extremely qualified and a living example of the “American dream.” And fulfilled before our eye! But instead of her receiving cheers… we are hearing ‘ jeers.’ How sad, and what a message to send our young people.

So unfortunately, such reactions continue. Yet, in the process one cannot fail to ask: what is goal behind this? Are the Republicans at this stage of the game, prepared to alienate a whole group of voters? Is this about looking for perfection in a nominee? But Are there any such ‘perfectionists to be found on the Supreme Court, as it now stands?

If that is case, someone please share that with me. However, she expected to be confirmed, irrespective of how long the hearings . So is their response about beating a dead horse? Creating “noise” just to be heard?

They may be succeed, somewhat. But in terms of use of political capital, and in a meaningful way…I say show me the results. In the meantime, I look to see how President Obama continues to ‘market’ Sonia Sotomayor. Given his skills and political savvy– with one stroke he will win enough support to have her confirmed and add another voting blog to the column — under Democrats. Prove me wrong!

If that was the outcome the GOP expected I say kudos! For getting it ‘right.”

The President believes in his nominee for the position vacated by Judge Souter, Judge Sotomayor. He the President is said to know a lot about the Constitution. He should know what it will take to govern on the Supreme Court of the land. Let’s confirm the Judge and allow the President to have his nominee.
