Frank Rich: General McChrystal And The 36 Hours That Shook Washington

President Obama, inherited this war– but as so many rightly say, this will not end well. Not ever. Therefore the question remains: how will we extricate ourselves from it?

As Rich says “if we and the president don’t absorb these revelations and learn from them, the salutory effects, denouement of the drama, however triumphant for Obama in the short run, will be for naught.” Well said!

The focus remains, therefore, on what we have learned from the General who had the responsibility to conduct this war. Eight years into it, we are still not sure exactly what the gains are.

Again, the president inherited this war, but this stage despite my concerns about the Taliban and terrorism... we must think EXIT strategy and fast. We must not only change the face– as in General Patreaus, but also the policy. Losing General McChrystal is one thing, losing here at home, as support erodes– even worse.

General McCrystal how did you manage to say all those things about people you should be reporting to? President Obama I think that this war in Afghanistan has been sucking the life blood out of taxpayers and americans standard of living. At the end of this year unless there is dramatic change for the positive then please get out of that place. I once read an article referring to Afghanistan as a place that empires go to die. I sure hope America does not allow herself to have that happen. Those people are trixters and from Karzi down seem to want a easy way to get US dollars. Taxpayers or should I say I am tired, of all the taxes I have paid and life in America is becoming worse not because of President Obama but rather because of all the wars that continue. I sincerely hope that all these things will cease soon. President Obama I continue to pray for you and your family, and I am delighted that VP Byden is who he is.

Afghanistan– "the place where 'empires' go to die." Interesting concept/theory. America and its role in this part of world– a big gamble. We need to flatten the caves of the Taliban and get the heck out. Karzai cant be trusted, American dollars and lives lost, going down the drain–could be for nothing. Yet, want to give Obama a chance to get this 'right'
Unlike what Michael Steele thinks, this was Bush's war.
